Week 2

Allsorts threw Box A wide open with a 49 point win over Stogumber A.  Linda
Golding played some exceptional attacking table tennis and was too much for
Stogumber to handle.  She finished the night 71 points to the good having
restricted David Bryant & Martyn Summerell to only 12 points each.
Minehead A remain in contention having defeated Barn Boys by a margin of 74
points.  It was a good all round team performance from Minehead with Martin
Shoots, Dave Veale and Geoff Walker gaining 27, 20 & 27 points
respectively.
Swifts look favourites to top Box D following a 44 point win over
Wiveliscombe.  Harry Woodland was man of the match finishing with a surplus
of 46 points.  This included a 55 point demolition of father David
Woodland.  Michael Hodgson weighed in with a personal gain of 7 points.  A
335-308 success over Basement Dwellers keep Wiveliscombes hopes of reaching
the knockout stages alive.  Guy Vercoe was Wivi's star man with a gain of
34 points.
Roy Hooper put in a top performance for Roys Boys and contributed 44 points

towards an 18 point victory over Basement Dwellers.

Barbarians look to be unstoppable in Box C.  A huge 103 point win over
Baptist B leaves them with a points difference of +157.  Hobby Horse did
well to restrict Barbarians to a 54 point win and thus give themselves a
chance of progressing further.  Corrine Rees did particularly well for
Hobby Horse conceding only 9 points.
Box D has been hit by postponements but Platos & Baptist A hold pole
positions having both defeated Timberscombe Tigers.

Week 3

Stogumber A top Box A following an 89 point win over Minehead A.  Martyn
Summerell top scored with a personal points gain of 64.  John Watson also
enjoyed a great performance to finish 29 points to the good.  There was
some resistance from Minehead A - Geoff Walker & Rupert Ell both defeated
Noddy Bryant and kept their deficits to 13 and 26 respectively.
Allsorts look firm favorites to join Stogumber in progressing from Box A.
They defeated Barn Boys by a margin of 31 points.  Linda Golding continued
her excellent form to gain 30 points. She was well supported by Gordon
Horobin who played a fine match to finish with a surplus of 19 points.
Andy Fay put up the strongest battle for Barn Boys dropping just 2 points.
Swifts made it 3 cup wins out of 3 with a slender 17 point winning margin
over Basement Dwellers.  Toby Kerslake put in a fine performance for Swifts
to gain 18 points.  Michael Hodgson broke even and Hamish Cuthbertson
dropped just a point to ensure victory for the Swifts.  This despite a 4
point gain for Josh Hurley.  Another closely fought game saw Barbarians go
down by only 12 points at Mishits.  Ollie Rew (+8) and Jamie Robertson
(+20) did the damage for Mishits.  Sam Hutchings was unfortunate to finish
on the losing side having pulled 27 points for Barbarians.  R & B Seniors
have been forced to withdraw from Box D leaving just 3 teams to battle for

the 2 quarter final places.

Quarter Final

The Quarter Final round of the team Handicap Cup produced four cracking
matches.  With total scores around and above 300 the four winning margins
were just 4, 5, 5 and 13 points.  Swifts squeezed through to the
semi-finals with a slender four point victory over Baptist B.  Michael
Hodgson and Harry Woodland made gains of 18 and 13 points respectively but
it was Hamish Cuthbertson who saw Swifts through with a brave performance
in the evenings final game.  Lynne Burrows needed an eleven point gain for
a Baptist victory but despite having had a difficult match and dropping 5
points in the first set  Cuthbertson steadied his nerve to keep the final
set to 20-21.  Baptists Sifa Vea was unfortunate to end up on the losing
side having made a personal points gain of 22.
Barbarians came out on top by just 5 points in a real ding-dong battle with
Wiveliscombe.  In the penultimate game Wivi's Guy Vercoe pulled a massive
35 points and appeared to have secured them a semi-final spot.  However
Sam Hutchings rounded off a superb performance with an extraordinary 31
point win over George Carter.  Hutchings finished with a personal points
surplus of 69.
Martyn Summerell found his -23 handicap too much to bear in the face of
some fine offensive table tennis from both Bob Mullis and Mike Vickery.
Platos eventually defeated Stogumber A by just 5 points thanks largely to
Vickery who finished with a points surplus of 41.  Despite a valiant effort
by Mervyn Hillier who recovered 16 points for Stogumber in the final game
and finished 46 points to the good - it was Platos who made it to the
Semi's.
Baptist A took the fourth semi-final spot with a 13 point victory at
Allsorts.  In an extremely tight contest Linda Golding and Gordon Horobin
pulled 4 & 3 points for Allsorts.  However it was Juniors Mathew and Marcus

Short who assured Baptists of their win with gains of 11 and 8 points

respectively.

Handicap Semi-Final Draw
Swifts  v  Barbarians
Platos  v  Baptist A
Semi Finals
The semi-final stage of the Handicap Cup produced two keenly & closely
fought matches.  Swifts entertained Barbarians and got off to a flying
start with Toby Kerslake gaining 26 points from Vince Court.  Sam Hutchings
who finished with an overall surplus of 23 points for Barbarians defeated
Michael Hodgson by 11 points in game 2.  In game 4 Hodgson came back well
to gain 14 points against Vince Court. This was a real to and fro battle but
Kerslake finished the match 28 points to the good and team mate Harry
Woodland made sure of victory for the Swifts with an overall gain of 11
points.  With Michael Hodgson putting in a steady performance and dropping
only 5 points from his 3 games Swifts came out on top by a margin of 34.
The second semi-final was decided by just a single point.  Mike Vickery got
Platos off to a storming start with a 19 point victory over Marcus Short.
In game 3 Matthew Short edged Baptist A into the lead as he gained 23
points from Paul Rees.  After game 5 the match was all square and again
after game 8 in which Paul Rees gained 9 points for Platos the scores were
level.  In the first set of the last game Roy Fernyhough gained 3 points
for Baptists with a 21-18 win but in the final set of the night Michael
Vickery recovered well to win 21-17 to give Platos the match by just one
point.

Final

Swifts took the handicap championship as they defeated Platos by 43 points
in the cup final.  Platos put up a great fight and did manage to gain points
sporadically during the evening.  Paul Rees, Mike Vickery and Bob Mullis
all managed to make small points gains over Harry Woodland who was
obviously feeling the pressure of playing in a cup final at such a young age.
However it was largely due to Woodland maintaining his composure at
critical times that saw Swifts through.  He recovered from a heavy 9-21 first
set defeat to Mike Vickery to hold the second set to 17-21 and reversed a
17-21 defeat against Paul Rees to edge the second set 21-19.  Team mates

Toby Kerslake and Michael Hodgson were both on top form and pulled 33 and

36 points respectively.  Both played with great confidence and maturity to

ensure that Swifts took the title.
