Week 1

Even West Somerset Table Tennis Associations new scoring system of a point per set
could not separate Wiveliscombe and Stogumber A as they tied the first league
encounter of the season 25 points each.
Dave Woodland was the only player to manage a maximum of 9 sets conceding only
4.  Eighty year old George Carter made a valuable contribution for Wiveliscombe with
4 points which included a fine win over Mervyn Hillier.  Barbarians got off to a flyer
with 36 - 7 win over promoted Baptist A.  Vince Court, Chris Norman and Sam
Hutchings all recorded maximums for Barbarians. Brothers, Marcus and Mathew
Short collected 4 points between them for Baptists.
Dave Veale and Geoff Walker scored nine set maximums as Minehead A beat Mishits
27 - 12.  Mishits who were promoted from Division 2 found the going tough but 4 sets
from David Gliddon, 3 from Ian Rew and 1 from Jamie Robertson contributed to a
respectable total of 12.
In Division Two Swifts (formerly Hobby Horse Juniors) proved to be too strong for
league newcomers R & B Seniors and stormed to a 36 - 5 victory.  Toby Kerslake,
Hamish Cuthbertson and Harry Woodland combined to record maximum points for
Swifts.  Phil Webber and Will Sherring managed two points a piece for R & B
Seniors.
Timberscombe Tigers edged a close encounter with Basement Dwellers by 24 points
to 20.  Terry Cadman recorded a maximum 9 sets for Tigers.  Ali Lang added an
important point in his first league appearance.
Baptist B defeated newcomers Allsorts by 33 points to 15 thanks to maximums from
Sifa Vea and Tony Burrows.  Linda Golding made a welcome return to league table
tennis and contributed 4 points to the Allsorts total.
Barn Boys got their season off to a winning start with a 23 - 18 win against Hobby
Horse.  Norman Ell recorded a 9 point maximum for Barn Boys.  Hobby Horse captain,
Mike Lawrie scored 6 points, Alison Cliffe and Mark Dascombe added 3 and 4 points
respectively.

Week 2

Mervyn Hillier and John Watson scored nine set maximums for Stogumber A as they defeated Roys Boys by 33 - 13.  Barry Hooper and Roy Hooper battled well for the Boys and mustered 10 points between them.

 

Wiveliscombe are early League leaders following a 34-8 victory at Mishits.  Dennis Buckingham and David Woodland scored maximums for the away side.  For Mishits Ian Rew recorded a fine 3-1 success over veteran George Carter.

 

In Division Two Sifa Vea and Tony Burrows maintained their 100% records as Baptist B defeated R & B Seniors 34-4.  Trevor Short chipped in with two singles wins.  Steve Robinson took all of R & B's points which included a 3 sets to 1 win over Short.

 

Swifts continued their great start to the season with a 28-16 success over Timberscombe Tigers.  Toby Kerslake preserved his unbeaten start but was worked hard by both Mike Dibble and Terry Cadman.

 

Allsorts came out on top of The Lawns Derby defeating Hobby Horse 27-10.  Linda Golding scored a maximum for Allsorts and Barbara Parker weighed in with two singles wins.  Gordon Horobin also contributed to the Allsorts total with his first singles win of the season.  Alison Cliffe and Ginny Dundas battled well for Hobby Horse winning 2 & 1 singles respectively.

 

A strong Basement Dwellers side edged a close encounter with Barn Boys by 26 points to 21.  A Bryan Howe maximum and two singles successes for Josh Hurley ensured that Dwellers came out on top.  Darby Ash was Barn Boys star player and recorded fine wins over Josh Hurley and Dave Robinson.

Week 3
Wiveliscombe head Division One following a comprehensive 34 - 6 win at Roys Boys.  David Woodland maintained his 100% record and captain Dennis Buckingham chipped in with a maximum of his own.  Stogumber A ran out 27-18 winners at Barbarians despite a fine Vince Court maximum.  Sam Hutchings and Dave Hurley added 6 and 2 points respectively to Barbarians total but a maximum 9 doubles points made the difference for Stogumber.
 
Minehead A edged a close encounter with Baptist A by just 2 points.  Geoff Walker was Minehead's match winner and notched up a full nine points.  Malcolm Tate scored two singles wins for Baptists and was well supported by Marcus and Matthew Short who totalled 6 and 3 points respectively.  Minehead's victory was followed by a 27-15 defeat by Platos.  Paul Rees scored a fine maximum for Platos.
 
It was a week of firsts in Division 2.  Hobby Horse recorded their first ever league victory with a 22 - 18 win over R & B Seniors.  Ginny Dundas became the first Hobby Horse player to achieve a maximum & thus secured the win.  Josh Hurley notched a fine maximum as Basement Dwellers defeated Allsorts by 28 points to 18.
 
Swifts slumped to their first defeat of the season at home to table topping Baptist B.  The match brought together two undefeated players in Toby Kerslake and Tony Burrows.  It was the Baptist B captain who came out on top and is now the only League 2 player with a 100% record.

Week 4

Only one First Division game survived postponement.  Platos Republicans
made up ground on the top teams with a 36-8 victory over Baptist A.  Paul
Rees, Bob Mullis and Mike Vickery all recorded maximums for Platos.  For
the Baptists Malcolm Tate with 3 points and Marcus Short with 2 put up good
resistance.  Matthew Short showed that he is not overawed by life in the
First Division and took a point of his own against Mike Vickery.  Basement
Dwellers hold second spot in Division Two following a 36-1 victory over R &
B Seniors.  Dave Robinson, Bryan Howe and Josh Hurley all recorded 9-0
maximums in their singles.  Phil Webber and Eric Norman took a set in the
final doubles of the evening to ensure that R & B avoided a complete
whitewash.

League leaders Baptist B went one better than the Basement Dwellers and
scored a perfect 36-0 success over Hobby Horse.  Both Mike Dibble and Terry
Cadman recorded maximums for Timberscombe Tigers as they defeated Allsorts
by 26 points to 15.  Barbara Parker and Gordon Horobin scored 3 points a
piece for Allsorts and added a further 3 in winning their doubles.  Barn
Boys & Swifts battled out a very close encounter in which Barn Boys came
out on top by a single point.  Normal Ell was top scorer with a points
tally of 8 for the Barn Boys who also took a maximum 9 points from the
doubles.  For Swifts Toby Kerslake (9) and Harry Woodland (8) were chief
contributors.

 

Week 5

 

Stogumber A are the new League leaders following a 30 - 17 home win over
Minehead A.  Captain David Bryant completed his first maximum of the season
with a 3-1 victory over Dave Veale.  Mervyn Hillier also took maximum
points for Stogumber and veteran John Watson added a further 7 points to
the home teams total.  Rupert Ell notched up 3 points for Minehead in his
first start of the season.
Wiveliscombe went down 17-28 to a strong Barbarians team.  Chris Norman
became the first player to defeat Dave Woodland in reaching his fine
maximum.  Vince Court & Sam Hutchings added 6 points each to Barbarians
total.
Barbarians took their points haul for the week to 59 with a 31-15 win at
Platos.  Both Chris Norman and Sam Hutchings recorded maximums.  Paul Rees
was Platos top scorer gaining 7 points from his singles.
Having brought two fixtures forward to avoid postponement Allsorts top
Division 2.  They defeated Swifts by 25 points to 20 and followed up with a
36-6 victory at R & B Seniors.  For Allsorts Gordon Horobin scored his
first maximum of the season at R & B.  Linda Golding ensured victory over
Swifts with another fine maximum.   Having scored a maximum for Allsorts
against R & B as a reserve Michael Hodgson then took 6 points against them

for Swifts.

 

Week 6
The three leading sides in Division One all recorded 36 point maximums.
Minehead A managed 5 points against Wiveliscombe.  Dave Veale & Martin
Shoots each took a set from Denis Buckingham and Martin Shoots did
exceptionally well to take a set from David Woodland.  Minehead's other 2
points came from the doubles.
Roys Boys found the going equally tough at Barbarians.  Their 3 points came
courtesy of Bob Preston who won a set against Sam Hutchings.  Hutchings
also dropped a set to Barry Hooper who went on to gain the Boys 3rd point
in partnering father Roy in the doubles.  Roy Fernyhough won the first set
of thenight for Baptist A against Stogumber's Martyn Summerell.  Matthew
Short put in a fine performance to take a set from David Bryant and then
teamed up with brother Marcus to win 2 more sets against Bryant and Mervyn
Hillier in the doubles.
In Division Two R & B Seniors added 11 points to their seasons tally thanks
largely to a singles win each for Phil Webber, Eric Norman and Louise
Mullet.  Terry Cadman and Mike Dibble recorded maximums for opponents
Timberscombe Tigers.  Despite fielding only two players Swifts scored a
21-17 victory over Hobby Horse. Toby Kerslake and Harry Woodland both
achieved maximums for Swifts.  Corrine Rees was top scorer for Hobby Horse
with a 5 point total.
A Linda Golding maximum ensured victory for Allsorts as they defeated Barn
Boys by 26 points to 20.  Barbara Parker added a further 7 points for
Allsorts.  Darby Ash was Barn Boys chief contributor with a haul of 8
points.  Basement Dwellers became the first team to beat Baptist B this
season.  A Bryn Howe maximum which included a first singles defeat for Tony
Burrows helped Dwellers to their victory.  Josh Hurley & Dave Robinson
added 7 and 4 points respectivley for the Dwellers.

Week 7

In a re-arranged fixture Mishits recorded their first win of the season with
a 29-16 success over Baptist A.  Ollie Rew scored a 9 point maximum and was
well supported by Ian Rew and David Gliddon who amassed 6 and 8 points
respectively.  Marcus Short starred for Baptist with a match total of 6
points.  Mishits went on to give Stogumber A a run for their money.  Both
Ian and Ollie Rew defeated veteran John Watson to help their team to a
match total of 12 points.  Wiveliscombe trail Stogumber by only 5 points
having scored a 34-10 win over a depleted Platos.  Mike Vickery and Paul
Rees took Platos 10 points which included five set wins over Wivi Captain
Denis Buckingham.  Baptist A & Roys Boys battled out a 24 all draw.  Marcus
Short was again Baptists top scorer with 7 points.  Brother Mathew played
the doubles which contributed 6 vital points.  Barry Hooper of Roys Boys
was the only player to manage a maximum 9 points.
Only 3 points separate the top 3 sides in Division 2.  Basement Dwellers
moved into top spot with a 27-20 victory at Swifts.  Bryan Howe recorded
his 3rd successive maximum whilst Josh Hurley and Dave Robinson added 7 & 6
points respectively for the Dwellers.  Michael Hodgson was the Swifts top
scorer with a personal tally of 6 which included fine wins over both Hurley
and Robinson.
Players are reminded that the first coaching workshop evening takes place
at the Lawns on Wednesday 1st December at 7.00pm.  All are welcome.

Wiveliscombe closed to within one point of leaders Stogumber with a maximum
36 point haul at home to Baptist A.  Paul Nutkins, David Woodland & Dennis
Buckingham all achieved maximums.  Malcolm Tate returned half of Baptists 6
point total.  Stogumber themselves dropped only 4 points in defeating
Platos by 32 points to 15.  Platos Paul Rees appeared to be heading towards
a maximum having defeated both Martyn Summerell and David Bryant in 5 sets.
However Mervyn Hillier put in a fine performance to defeat Rees in straight
sets.  For Platos much improved Michael Vickery then defeated Hillier by 3
sets to 2.  Roys Boys, Strengthened by Lee Hoopers first appearance of the
season, recorded their 1st league win with a 24-21 home victory over
Minehead A.  Hooper notched up a maximum and was well supported by brother
Barry (5 points) and father Roy (3 points). Dave Veale and Geoff Walker
scored 8 points each for Minehead to keep the match score level until the
final doubles.
Basement Dwellers extended their lead at the top of Division 2.  Josh
Hurley and Bryan Howe maximums helped the Dwellers to a 32-9 victory over
Hobby Horse.  Ginny Dundas and Mike Lawrie scored 3 singles points each and
then took 2 sets in the final doubles of the evening for the away side.
A fine team performance saw Baptist B win at Timberscombe Tigers by 28
points to 16.  Tony Burrows and daughter Kerry Manicom scored 8 points each
for Baptist.  Sifa Vea made a valuable contribution with 6 singles points.
Lynne Burrows played as Baptists fourth player in the doubles which
contributed a further 6 points.  Terry Cadman was once again Tigers top
scorer and was the only player to manage a maximum 9 points.

Catch Up
Two outstanding Division 2 results saw Barn Boys follow up a 34-13 defeat
at Baptist B with a 33-9 victory at R & B Seniors.  Garham Lamacraft
contributed a fine total of 16 out of a possible 18 points across the 2
matches for Barn Boys.  Lamacrafts only defeat came at the hands of
Baptists Kerry Manicom who completed a fine maximum with a win in five
sets.
Steve Robinson took 6 of R & B Seniors 9 points with singles successes over
both Andy Fay and Norman Ell.  Phil Norman added a further 2 points in
losing over 5 sets to Ell.
