Only 14 points separated first division Minehead A and second division
Baptist B in their opening Handicap Cup encounter.  Sifa Vea was the only
Baptist member to finish with a positive points total making a gain of one.
Geoff Walker and Martin Shoots made gains of 28 and 21 respectively to
steer Minehead to victory.  Baptists put in a fine performance and after 8
games were only 2 points behind their first division opponents.  However a
12 point winning margin for Martin Shoots over Tony Burrows in the final
game of the evening ensured that Minehead finished on top.

Timberscombe Tigers swept their first division opponents Stogumber A aside
with a huge 80 point win.  Terry Cadman played a starring role for the
Tigers with a personal points haul of 61.  Stogumber were unable to contain
Cadmans accurate and consistent attack.  Both Mike & Jez Dibble played
thoughtfully and steadily to add 6 and 13 points respectively.

In Box B Basement Dwellers outgunned Hobby Horse Seniors to win by a 35
point margin.  This was despite a fine performance from Ginny Dundas who
made a gain of 19 points for the seniors.  Basement Dwellers captain Laurie
Wells ended the match 20 points to the good and Dave Robinson chipped in
with a pgain of 17.

Washford are early leaders of Box C following a 103 point success over
Baptist A.  Big gains of 47 points for Rod Richards and 28 points for
Mervyn Hillier along with a 28 point haul for Derek Highfield in his first
outing of the season completed the Washford tally.  Performance of the
round came from Hobby Horse Juniors in Box D.  Their rapid improvement was
confirmed by a massive 127 demolition of Roys Boys.  Patient rally building
with selective and devastating attacking play was a feature of each of the
Juniors' performances.  Toby Kerslake + 48, Matthew Short + 45 and Michael
Hodgson + 34 made a collective nonsense of their allocated handicaps.

The postponed matches between Misfits and Barbarians and Barn Boys &
Wiveliscombe are to be played weeks commencing 19th October and 17th
December respectively.  The outcome of Ells Angels V Platos Republicans is
yet to be decided as Platos failed to field a full team.

Stogumber A gave themselves a chance of reaching the Quarter Finals with a
75 point win over Minehead A.  David Bryant and John Watson pulled 17 and
20 points respectively with Martyn Summerell gaining the balance.  Dave
Veale was Minehead's most effective player dropping only 4 points on the
night.  Timberscombe Tigers made it 2 wins out of 2 with a 19 point victory
over Baptist B.  Jez Dibble was Man of the Match with a personal gain of 28
points.
In Box C Baptist A scored a surprise victory over Ells Angels although a
Committee decision will need to be made over Baptist's inclusion of Matthew
Short who has already appeared for Hobby Horse Juniors.  Only Vince Court
finished the evening with a plus points score for the Angels managing a
surplus of 14.  Marcus Short put in a superb performance to finish the
match 61 points to the good.  Also in box C Washford & Plato's Republicans
fought out a very tight match with Washford eventually winning by a margin
of 25 points.  Rod Richards (+19) and Mervyn Hillier (+9) pulled points for
Washford.  Paul Rees gained 3 points for Platos but it wasn't enough to
save them from defeat.
Hobby Horse Juniors lead Box D following a comfortable 60 point victory
over Wiveliscombe.  There were gains of 46 points for Toby Kerslake and 17
points for Matthew Short.  Guy Vercoe made his debut for Wiveliscombe and
finished 3 points to the good.  Roys Boys defeated Barn Boys by 25 points.

Ells Angels and Washford look favourites to progress to the Handicap Cup
Quarter Finals following a closely fought contest which Angels eventually
won by 43 points. Vince Court was Angels man of the match with a points
gain of 42.  Sam Ell added 22 points to ensure victory.
Misfits & Basement Dwellers fought out the closest match of the round with
Misfits eventually winning by just 4 points.  Josh Hurley scored a maximum
126 points for the Dwellers and gained 32 points overall.  For Misfits Ben
Sellick (+10) and Jamie Robertson (+4) managed to gain points.  It was
Sellick that secured victory for Misfits with a 21-13, 21-18 win over Dave
Robinson in the final game of the night.
Hobby Horse Juniors booked their place in the next round with a 131 point
success over Barn boys.  Both Toby Kerslake and Michael Hodgson scored the
maximum 126 points.  They were well supported by Matthew Short who missed
out on a maximum by only 4 points.  Wiveliscombe look set to join the
Juniors in the next round having defeated Roys Boys by a margin of 114
points.  Dave Woodland stormed to a 61 point surplus, George Carter and Guy
Vercoe added 19 and 34 point gains respectively.
Stogumber A lie in second spot in Box A following a narrow 21 point win
over Baptist B.  David Bryant & Martyn Summerell made light of their large
handicaps with gains of 30 and 25 points.  For the Baptists Sifa Vea
finished 10 points to the good.  Captain for the night Kerry Manicom
typified Baptists efforts by taking 2 points from Martyn Summerell in the
final set of the match.
Captains are asked to ensure that outstanding cup fixtures are played

before Monday 22nd March.

Re-Arranged Match
In a rearranged cup match Hobby Horse Seniors and Barbarians battled out an
extremely close encounter that Barbarians eventually won by just 7 points.
Ginny Dundas scored an overall gain of 12 points for the seniors, but it

was Sam Jordan with a gain of 36 points who made sure of a Barbarians win.

All but one of the Handicap Cup group fixtures are now complete.  Hobby

Horse Seniors look set for a place in the quarter finals from Box B

following a 331 - 244 win over a depleted 2 man Misfits side.  Wiveliscombe

and Hobby Horse Juniors progress from Box D following Wiveliscombe 351 -

299 win at Barn Boys

Hobby Horse Juniors sailed through to the Semi Finals of the Handicap Cup
with a comfortable win over Stogumber A.  Michael Hodgson led the way for
the Juniors with a personal gain of 71 points.  Matthew Short also made
light work of First Division opposition and finished with a gain of 52
points.  Hamish Cuthbertson completed the rout with a fine performance
which resulted in a surplus of 21 points.
Washford will play the Juniors in the semi finals following a 58 point
victory over Basement Dwellers.  The Dwellers put up a good showing with
Josh Hurley recording a personal gain of 4 points.  Derek Highfield made a
rare but welcome appearance for Washford and finished 25 points to the
good.  Mervyn Hillier and Chris Norman added gains of 21 and 12 points
respectively.  Ells Angels eventually came out on top of an extremely close
encounter with Hobby Horse Seniors.  Angels edged the match by just 6
points and were indebted to Junior Lawrence Dascombe who replaced the
absent Sam Ell.  Dascombe played well to keep his deficit down and with
Vince Court and Rupert Ell making gains of 25 and 21 points Angels edged
through.
The fourth semi final place is yet to be decided as the Timberscombe Tigers
v Washford tie was postponed
Week 24
Timberscombe Tigers filled the fourth semi final place in the Handicap Cup
following a thrilling 2 point win over first division Wiveliscombe.
Wiveliscombe appeared to be weakened by the absence of Captain Dennis
Buckingham but it was his replacement Guy Vercoe that very nearly won the
tie for Wivi.  He finished with a personal points gain of 36.  It was a
good team effort from Tigers with gains of 13 points and 5 points for Jez
and Mike Dibble that saw them through.  Terry Cadman had the responsibility
of playing the final game of the night and needed to keep his deficit to
Dave Woodland to 9 points for Tigers to progress.  In what must have been a
tense finish Cadman conceded only 8 points to give Tigers the slenderest
winning margin.
In contrast Hobby Horse Juniors cruised into the final with a 76 point
victory over first division leaders Washford.  The Juniors performance
again emphasised their rapid improvement since the setting of the handicaps
at the beginning of the season.  Toby Kerslake and Michael Hodgson ensured
the Juniors success with points gains of 53 and 39 respectively.  Despite
dropping points team mate Matthew Short played steadily and conceded less
than 3 points a game to help the Juniors through to the final.

and Matthew Short 28.  Tigers Captain Mike Dibble proved that success over
the Juniors is achievable and made a personal points gain of 5.  However

Tigers went down by 78 points.
