The first West Somerset Table Tennis Association tournaments to be held at
The Lawns Luncheon Club venue took place this week. There were 10 entrants
in the Veteran (over 60) tournament. The two round robin groups were
headed by Dave Veale and Gordon Horobin from Group One and David Gliddon
and Barbara Parker from Group Two.In the semi-finals Gordon Horobin (+12)
was defeated by David Gliddon (-4) and Dave Veale (-5) fought back well to
record a narrow victory over Barbara Parker (+4). Gliddon and Veale will
therefore meet on the finals night - a repeat of last seasons Veteran
Final.
The standard of table tennis played in the Junior Tournament was excellent
as was the sprit in which the matches were competed. The 6 entrants
represent a bright future for the Association and a great source of pride.
A seventh Junior with great potential - Harry Woodland was unable to take
part due to holidays. In the Tournament itself Toby Kerslake (O) and
Marcus Short (-4) found their much reduced handicaps hard to carry.
Despite playing some superb attacking table tennis Kerslake was defeated by
both Michael Hodgson (+7) and Matthew Short (+7). Hamish Cuthbertson (+10)
notched up fine wins over David Hodgson (+12) and Marcus Short despite
being discontent with his own level of performance on the night. The
youngest and least experienced entrant David Hodgson did superbly well to
record successes over both Marcus Short and Toby Kerslake. Matthew Short
found this seasons experience of First Division table tennis to be a great
asset and won all five of his matches, playing with great authority
throughout. He will be joined in the Juniors final by Michael Hodgson who
played some exciting attacking table tennis to win four of his five
encounters.

| 24 players formed 12 doubles pairings to compete in the West Somerset 2010 | |
| Doubles Tournament. The teams were split into 4 groups to play on a round | | |
| robin basis. Michael Vickery and Andy Fay and Kerry Manicom partnering | | |
| Michael Hodgson progressed from Group One to meet the pairings of Tony | | |
| Burrows and Jamie Robertson and Vince Court & Ali Lang respectively. David | |
| Bryant and partner Hamish Cuthbertson topped Group 3 ahead of runners up | | |
| Toby Kerslake and Harry Woodland. From Group 4 Mathew Short & Barbara | | |
| Parker pinched top spot from Marcus Short & Mike Lawrie. | | | |
| | | | | | | | |
| All 6 junior entrants made it through to Round 2 with their respective | | |
| partners again emphasising the progress they have made. From Round 2 | | |
| Michael Vickery & Andy Fay progressed to meet David Bryant & Hamish | | |
| Cuthbertson in one semi-final. The second semi saw Junior paring Toby | | |
| Kerslake and Harry Woodland meet Kerry Manicom and Michael Hodgson. | | |
| Consistency was the name of the game in the semis and it was Bryant & | | |
| Cuthbertson along with Manicom & Hodgson that by playing the steadier table | |
tennis made it to the final to be played on Finals Night. Over the last couple of weeks the Lawns has proved to be a very suitable | | |
| venue for the Associations Tournaments. Whilst only accommodating 3 | | |
| tables the hall makes for a very pleasant and sociable atmosphere that has | | |
| een enjoyed by all. | |

| Twenty-Seven players turned out to compete in the West Somerset Table | | Tennis Association Singles Handicap Tournament. This was a good turn out | | with a nice mix of first and second division players taking part. | | | Of the twelve first round matches 7 threw up first division v second | | division ties. Whilst the handicapping produced some hard fought games | | first division players prevailed in all 7 fixtures. They were joined in | | round 2 by 2 players without previous league experience - Don Davis and | | Alan Blackmore, along with 3 juniors who progressed from round 1 - Toby | | Kerslake, Michael Hodgson and Hamish Cuthbertson. Despite losing the first | | 12 points of his match with Tony Burrows Cuthbertson kept his nerve to come | | through 21-18, 20-21. Also making it through to the second round was Di | | Preece who won her first competitive game to defeat Mike Dibble. | | | From the top half of the draw it was Junior Toby Kerslake who progressed | | through to the final which will be played on the Associations Finals Night. | | Kerslake defeated Di Preece in Round 2 and then Martyn Summerell in the | | quarter-finals with a superb display of attacking table tennis. He | | repeated a very mature performance in the semi-finals to defeat Stogumer | | A's David Bryant 21-16, 21-16. | | | In the bottom half of the draw Don Davis took full advantage of what in | | hindsight appeared to be a very generous +12 handicap. Despite not having | | played competitively for many years Davis defeated Junior Michael Hodgson | | in round 2 and Wiveliscombe's David Woodland in the quarter finals. He met | | veteran Dave Veale in the semi-final but again a combination of some | | excellent offensive backhand strokes and a 17 point difference in handicaps | | saw him through to meet Toby Kerslake on finals night. | | | All in all this was an extremely well organised tournament that was | | completed in an excellent spirit. Whilst the Lawns venue is limited to | | three tables and is slightly less than ideal for space at the ends of the | | tables it more than makes up for its shortfalls in being a very comfortable | | and socially enjoyable venue. | | | Players are reminded that West Somerset Table Tennis Association shirts | | complete with embroidered logo are now available to purchase from Barbara | | Parker at the very reasonable price of £12 each. |

Non Handicap Tournament
| Sixteen players completed in the West Somerset Table Tennis Association |
| Singles tournament. A good mix of Junior and Senior players from both |
| divisions one and two took part. Despite some valiant performances by |
| lower divisions players in the group stages Tony Burrows and Toby Kerslake |
| were the only 2 representatives from Division two in the last 16. Both |
| then came up against in form opponents in the shape of David Woodland and |
| Sam Hutchings and it was the top tier players that won through. Vince |
| Court and Martyn Summerell joined Woodland and Hutchings in the |
| semi-finals. Court by defeating Marcus Short and Summerell by coming |
| through a really hard fought five set match with veteran Dave Veale who |
| rolled back the years to play some fine offensive table tennis. David |
| Woodland edged through to Finals Night with a 16-14 last set win over Vince |
| Court. Martyn Summerell also made it through to the final having come back |
from 2 sets down to win 3 sets to 2 against Sam Hutchings. |

Finals Night |
|
|
|
|
A good gathering of members enjoyed some exciting table tennis and excellent
refreshments at West Somerset Table Tennis Associations annual Finals Night.
Mathew Short and Michael Hodgson contested the Juniors final. Despite getting off to
a shaky start and going 9-1 behind Michael Hodgson showed great temperament and
played his topspin attack consistently enough to take the first set 21-17. Mathew
Short never really recovered from letting the first set slip from his grasp and despite
some sporadic attacking flourishes it was Hodgsons greater consistency that gave him
the second set 21-12 and the title of Junior Champion.
There were also spirited comebacks in the next two matches. Having lost the first set
of the Veterans final 12-21 to some fine attacking play from Dave Veale, David Gliddon
moved up a gear to outplay Veale and take the second set 21-4.
The Consolation final took on a similar pattern. Kerry Manicom eased to a 21-13 win
over Mike Lawrie in the opening set. However Lawrie started to take the ball earlier in
the second set and fought back to win 21-11 thus taking the title by just 2 points.
In the Doubles final Hamish Cuthbertson hit some great winners to help himself and
partner David Bryant to a 21-18 win. In the second set Cuthbertson's consistency
dropped away and it was Michael Hodgson partnering Kerry Manicom that started to hit
winners from both flanks. Hodgson and Manicom won the second set 21-12 to take the
doubles title by an aggregate of 6 points.
The Handicap singles final saw Don Davis take full advantage of what in hindsight was a
very generous handicap of +12. Despite having such an uphill battle Junior Toby Kerslake
played very maturely with a good variety of attacking and heavy backspin strokes. Davis
needed all of his 12 point start in the first set which Kerslake did remarkably well to
restrict to a 18-21. In the second set Davis eased ahead as the handcapping proved too
much even for Kerslake to overcome and took it 21-12 to win by two straight sets.
The last game of the evening, the singles final between David Woodland and Martyn
Summerell was a closely fought affair which provided some great entertainment for the
spectators. Summerell's attacking tactics paid off handsomely in the first set which he
took 11-5. However Woodland steadied himself and defended superbly to take the second
set 11-4. The next two sets were shared and with Summerell's consistency never
matching the levels of the first set Woodland deservedly won the fifth set 11-9 to take the
Singles Champion title.
