West Somerset Table Tennis Association

There was a very healthy turn out for the West Somerset Table Tennis
Association's Finals Night.  The 32 players and friends that attended
witnessed some excellent competitive table tennis and enjoyed a first class
buffet at the Hobby Horse.  The first two matches of the evening saw Martyn
Summerell and Vince Court progress to the final of the non-handicap singles
with 3 set victories over Mervyn Hillier and Lee Hooper respectively.

The doubles final was played on an up to 21 points format and it was the
pairing of Mervyn Hillier and Mike Dibble that clinched the title with an
impressive performance against David Gliddon and Martin Shoots.

Despite carrying a painful muscle injury David Gliddon went on to battle
out the veterans final with Washfords Rod Richards.  A fine consistant
performance from Richards saw him through with Gliddons injury severely
hampering his attacking play.  In the consolation handicap final Dave Veale
made a terific start against Wiveliscombes David Woodland taking the first
set comfortably with a relentless backhand attack.   Woodland made an
impressive change to his game plan for the second set and this visibly
upset the rhythm of Veales play.  Despite a large deficit from the first
set Woodland eventually took the title in some style.  The final of the
non-handicap singles proved to be a one-sided affair.  Vince Court took the
initiative early on against Martyn Summerell and with consistent and
accurate offensive play became champion with relative ease.  Court never
allowed Summerell to settle into his game and swept him aside in a 3 sets
to 0 victory.

Summerell managed to salvage some pride in the handicap singles final with
a win over Rod Richards.  In an entertaining match Summerell took the first
set by an 11 point margin.  Although Richards was able to match him almost
point for point in the second set the damage had already been done and
Summerell took the winners trophy.

A Junior  Doubles was played between Hamish and Matthew, Toby and Luke and Michael and Owen. 

The above juniors are all non League players who have just started playing table tennis this year. After hard and well fought games the overall winners were Toby and Luke.  - well done!!
